When I first heard "The Next Day" I didnt think much of it, but it's really grown on me... I'm kind of bummed that we'll never get to hear it live.

I've played it heaps lately, probably because of its extra freight of being the last album before Blackstar,(which obviously has its own freight.)

The Next Day is a little all over the place, but that is appealing in itself, the guy was a crowd pleaser, (whilst remaining a thought-provoker) until the end.

I find it to be a very frustrating record, it has really great songs on it and songs that I think should at the very most have been on a B-side. I never play the Lp because of that. On the computer and Ipod I ended up making a selection from the Lp and bonus trax that I love playing. It is the only Bowie record that I have chopped up to listen to. Lodger was also a bit of a mess, but a mess I love.

This is how my selection ended up, maybe removing other peoples favourites?
Dirty Boys
Love Is Lost
Where Are We Now
The Informer
God Bless The Girl
So She
You Feel So Lonely You Could Die
Plan
Heat

(it's 34 min, it would fit perfectly on a record) :D

There's only 2 songs I don't care much for: You Feel So Lonely You Could Die and Heat.
Apart from them....I love the entire album, including the additional bonus-tracks. Favourites are I'd Rather Be High, So She, I'll Take You There, Valentines Day and The Stars.....so we have different taste
Been playing the LPs as well as the CDs many many times in recent times - sounds much better now, to me, than what it did back when it was released; some albums strangely enough sound better after they've got some years on their back and a listening-break

Yeah, it was weird. I'd agree that it is all over the place, but it's got some fantastic songs.

I hadn't known about it being released so one day after I got spotify I was on there and I wanted to listen to Reality and saw "The Next Day"  - I was kinda disappointed at first, because it just sounded like he was trying to do too much with mediocre results...
So I didnt listen to it again until after he died. Then, "love is lost" grabbed me...I was like "holy shit....it just didnt click at all the first few play throughs."   I hated The Stars are out Tonight....that's one of my least favorite songs on there, but I like the whole thing now.

For me, when an artist I love releases an album I usually either love it, hate it, or think "eh...that's OK, but nothing is grabbing me" - those last ones are usually ones thqat end up really liking over the long term - because it's like the album wins you over.....

weird that "heat" gets so little love.
i think it's a beautiful song that made a perfect ending to TND.
and now i always play it as sort of final track after "blackstar".

After nearly ten years of no new recording from David I was so grateful that TND came out, I didn't even try to ask myself: "Do I like it? Is there good music on it??" - pur happiness to hear new music, that is what I feel until today.
And I was happy to buy all formats that were given, DoLP, CD + 2CD + video-clips, short from drowning I was saved through getting new tunes of my greatest idol into my ears, until now I don't know if there are songs I like more than others, and I will never ask.

Oh, don't get me wrong when Where Are We Now appeared out of nothing I was ecstatic, surprised and as happy as can be, I had not thought that Bowie would release anything again. When they announced that an album was to follow there was no end to my joy. I was living in Berlin at the time and and before TND was released they put up a lot of posters for it around the city, making it difficult to wait (al thou I thought and think the cover is a crap design  :? ) Where Are We Now gave me really high hopes for the album, even thou Visconti was saying that it was unlike the rest of the album.
When it came out I was in the store the same day getting the LP and CD, I have bought all albums on release day since I got Let's Dance for my 14th birthday, this was the first time that I didn't go crazy and listened to it on non stop repeat, including Never Let Me Down where I also bought a lot of 12" singles, not a lot of play they get now :D I really wanted to like TND, but it is just all over the place when it comes to the quality of the songs, as I said earlier it I think it could have been a lot shorter and then it would have been really great, but that was not what Bowie wanted. Like you I off course also bought all the formats including the singles. Maybe I will warm up to the rest of the songs at some point.
In comparison when I came home with Blackstar it went straight on the record player and it played all day for two days till that crappy Monday arrived with the sad news, then it got every other play with other Bowie records in between, listening to side B of Low and "Heroes" was tough. Blackstar still plays.

..same with me, but I can't listen to Blackstar since that terrible monday....and I still can't listen to any Bowie-song in the whole, a few moments and then I'm full of tears, don't know if I will ever come clear with this pain.

...my post above Your's was not meant to critisize You, just my description of what I felt when TND came to me...

I didnt think of it as criticisms, I just wanted to explain my thoughts.
It is great to have a place to talk about all of the aspects of Bowie with like minded.
And I understand perfectly how you feel about TND

I was devastated and in chock, but I think unlike you I have to hear a ton of Bowie to get it through my system, or maybe I'm just trying to cling on. Not that it dosent still catch me, it will for a long time. There are songs I dont play yet.
I have listened to Bowie almost daily since that 14th birthday of mine, over time I think he became part of my DNA, the fact that he is not around is not really possible for me to comprehend.
Off course writing this makes me sad.

I go through phases with my listening. Because so little of what is newly released is any good I keep going back to Bowie or Pavement or massive attack or any other of the number oof great bands I love.

I was actually in a heavy Bowie phase already when Blackstar came out, I was working in my garage on the 10th listening to it on repeat, and noticed that I loved "I cant give everything away" - that there was something so beautiful in it and it really affected me emotionally. It's my favorite song on there.

I loved the song, and I was thinking "wow, Bowie really is kind of letting people know that he's mortal and has to keep something for himself"

It never even occurred to me that he could be sick.

The next morning I was lying in bed and picked up my iphone and went on facebook and I caught a glimpse of a post an old friend who loves Bowie had made before it flashed off of my screen, and all  saw was "He had his birthday, released his new album, and was gone just like that."  and I immediately felt my stomach drop and just went on google and saw it.

Then i understood - and have only heard the song once since I found out he died. It's just too intensely emotional, I have to prepare myself.

That was what prompted me to give "The Next Day" another chance - because I just couldnt listen to Blackstar a lot and wanted to hear more new Bowie....

I feel like The Next Day/Extra and Blackstar are meant to be seen as a collective. I remember reading an article when The Next Day was released that there were 29 songs in total and, at the time of Next Day Extra, 22 of those 29 had been released. Blackstar is 7 tracks. That makes up 29. I think the reason The Next Day seems so odd is because it's a story that out of order. I also hear a ton of thematic similarities between The Next Day/Extra and Blackstar...many forms of death, talks of stars and such. For instance, I see You Feel So Lonely, Valentine, The Next Day and Lazarus telling somewhat of a story. I interpret You Feel So Lonely as the precursor to the school shooting in Valentine, the killer who is stricken with remorse is being chased (The Next Day song) to the point of contemplating suicide (Lazarus - "look up here I'm in danger, I've got nothing left to lose, I'm so high it makes my brain whirl, dropped my cellphone down below" sounds like a man on the ledge of a building). I have this whole idea that The Next Day-Extra-Blackstar is one cohesive piece....call me crazy.

I actually loved TND + TND extra when I heard it. Of course, there are songs I am madly in love with, and there are ones I kinda like, and there some I just listen to because they are there. But I would not be able to cut it out, any of it, because it makes sense for me as it is.

And the theory about 29 tracks is interesting... Although it's highly questionable (Lazarus!), but it makes Bowie look like a crazy mastermind genious  :D
