As far as I know Bowie never said anything official about live recordings and bootlegs, but he mentioned it several times.

I just came across this when preparing the Prague 97 concert for upload:
http://www.bowiestation.com/temp/1997-06-25%20-%20Congress%20Centre%20-%20Prague%20-%20Czech%20Republic%20-%20Bootleggers.mp3

Bowie also mentioned bootleggers in some other concerts in 97 in about the same way.

Since some users ask about the legality and what was Bowies stand on bootlegs, I would like to compile a list of references, but for that I need help.

From memory I remember he talked about bootlegs on Bowienet with Boy George, and that he credited bootleggers in an interview in the early 70s.

I remember Bowie using words like: 'I don't give a flying fuck'

I am life that wants to live, in the midst of life that wants to live.

In one of the 1979 phone-ins (Capital Radio, don't ask which date) he said that he'd heard some good bootlegs, but his issue was simply that he didn't get paid for them.

Don't blame me, I didn't do it!

Shift Interview with David Bowie by John Turner, Shift, November 1999 - Has the so-called "MP3 revolution" had an impact on you?

Not even remotely. Revolution? I don't see it like that. It has been coming for a long time. I had a Rio last year! They've been taking my music and bootlegging my shows for ages. I know all the sites that have my bootlegs and all my MP3s. Actually, I don't give a flying fuck. I like the internet and I like the community. I think, to understand your presence on the net, you have to be a part of it and work within it. I thought it just looked so reactionary, for instance, of someone like Prince to clamp down on everything in terms of the lawsuits. You can't stop the sea from coming forward.

Helden site!!!

DAVID BOWIE and BOY GEORGE
27th February 1999
BowieNet Live Chat (members only)

Boy George: I have every Bowie record, including lots of bootlegs and I shall carry on buying them.

David Bowie: I feel very loved and the sun's just come out here.

Gilly: do you smoke, George?

Boy George: yes I do smoke and so do my favourite singers - Bowie and Joanie Mitchell. The only problem is I have asthma.

David Bowie: David asks, how do you feel about MP3?

Boy George: I don't have any problem with people having access to my music, even illegally, I think we make so much money anyway - why worry!

Boy George: I think people always want tangible things, even if they get the music on the internet, they will still buy the record.

David Bowie
: I'm completely in agreement with George on this.

Boy George: For a start, I always want to know what my favourite stars are wearing and who did the make-up. Even when I bought bootlegs I still bought the records.

Can't remember interviewer or show sure it was Bowie said he was always getting copies of bootlegs come across his desk, I presume from tapers or maybe commercial bootleg labels to show a good product they're doing, He didn't sound too worried said you'll never stop them

Bless the Tapers and Uploaders they make the Music Live

In 1979 a 14 year old fan called a phone in to speak with him and asked him about bootlegs to which Bowie went on a small rant about people making money out of them and he said they should come to him and pay him.

That was when he was still struggling for money so I guess his tune changed a lot following The Serious Money tour a few years later.

Vienna 97, for instance.

Does anybody know something more about this inside-tour-joke?

Was that the reason for the dj-set not being played past the 2nd or 3rd song?
