Has anyone here ever compiled the music that was used in the film?  I'd love a disc or download, even a YouTube playlist would be appreciated.  Any idea why a soundtrack LP wasn't issued at the time.

Can't answer the compilation question but here's something that an old colleague, may his soul rest in peace, wrote back in 2012 about an official release......

I'm surprised that fans haven't already made their own compilation. A lot of this could be pieced together.

If you search the 'net, you will find that some people have put their own versions together (with some pretty good artwork too.) One of these was featured on the "Spin The Blackest Circles" website but the post seems to have disappeared now.

However, there's much disagreement about which music actually featured in the film as can be seen in the link posted by MBF. I've watched the film hundreds of times and don't recall some of the songs mentioned... unless they were extremely brief snippets in the background.

Personally, I think the Stomu Yamashta tracks are the most representative and I've made my own compilation of those.

I made a compilation of the songs, some years ago. I got the list on some website about the movie, I forgot where.
Most of the music is not difficult to find floating around, As I recall the wale sounds took the longest to locate, not sure if I have all the right versions of the songs.
I agree with gouster that Stomu Yamashta is the core of the soundtrack, he is one funky guy, great stuff.

The IMDb has the best listing (including the Songs Of The Humpback Whale!) and, like MossGarden said, all tracks can be found on the 'net with a bit of digging... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074851/soundtrack?ref_=tt_trv_snd
